Our Homeschool Space

How is everyone adjusting to Distance Learning? We didn't have a work space for the kids because they had previously been doing all of their homework at the kitchen island. When we started homeschool I set up a six foot, folding table in the hallway by the kitchen (see photo below). It worked for the first couple of weeks but it was distracting for everyone so we decided to move to our little loft area upstairs.

We started our distance learning in March right before their spring break. The first week went way better than I had anticipated! The kids even put on matching shirts and called it their school uniform. So cute! We started with a schedule that included assignments that I created for them since the district was still working everything out. It was going well for us until the end of the second week when they started to realize this was not as temporary as they thought. Everyone started to get frustrated. A change needed to be made!

New schedule, new location, new attitude....

Changing it up.

I pulled an old IKEA table and chairs out of the garage that we had been using for their arts and crafts. I cleaned all of the dry paint off and it looked like new again. I wasn't sure how it would look in the space I had planned for it to go but it ended up working out so well!

Most of their crayons and markers had been in the garage for so long they were used and abused. I decided to purchased new supplies. I also needed storage for their work area so I ordered baskets, gallon sized glass jars with lids and glass cups for their pens and pencils. My daughter wanted to help me organize everything which made their new work area more appealing to her.

With new space and an adjusted schedule we're all doing so much better!! I have to say sticking with a schedule/ routine, having a clean, quiet work area has been key to everyone being productive. My kids even motivated me to sign up for an online course at Harvard University! When they're in school, I'm in school.... or doing laundry.....because it never stops.

Our loft area had their piano but we moved it to make space for their desk.

The original homeschool workspace was in between our kitchen, home bar and next to my husband's office. It wasn't a good location for anyone.
